Little Falls KB team places eighth at state

Forty-eight of the top knowledge bowl teams in the state competed in the Minnesota State Knowledge Tournament held May 1-2 at Cragun’s Conference Center on Gull Lake.

The tournament, divided by school size into two divisions of 24 teams each, culiminated the knowledge bowl season for the 1999-2000 school year.

The Little Falls team of Kyle Hokanson, Jonathan Wichmann, Josh Steffenson, and Steve Heise finished in eighth place, with 104 points, in the large school division. The Flyer team upended Crookston and Duluth East in the final round, but fell four points short of qualifying for a top six medal position. The four team members, all seniors, competed in two consecutive state tourneys.

Final scores showed the top 10 finishers led by St. Cloud Tech in first with 121 points, followed by Blake (115), Chaska (114), Hibbing (113), Cretin-Derham Hall (109), Hastings (108), Northfield (105), Little Falls (104), Moorhead (102) and Duluth East (102).

A second Flyer team finished the competition in 24th place with 79 points. Team members were senior Adam Surma, Dustin Hollermann, Jeff Cox, Paul Barnes, and David Ginder-Vogel.

Little Falls finished 18 last year in the state competition. Little Falls, previously Region Five Champions in the knowledge bowl in 1986, 1992, 1996, 1997, and 1999 collected their sixth region championship this year. The 1986 team won the state championship, beating Moorhead and Apple Valley in the championship round.

This was the sixth consecutive year that Little Falls Knowledge Bowl teams have qualified for the state tournament.
