Flyers fall to Spartans, Eagles in Section 8AAA baseball tourney

First Rocori, then St. Cloud Apollo–Little Falls lost twice in the Section 8AAA Baseball Tournament on Monday and failed to defend its championship of a year ago.

Against the fourth-seeded Spartans, the hosting and third-seeded Flyers fell behind 4-0 after the first inning and were unable to put together a big inning of their own and get back into contention.

Little Falls scored a run in the bottom of the second inning, but got no closer than three runs.

Chris Bell pitched the entire game for Little Falls. He allowed the nine runs (three earned) on eight hits and four walks and struck out three batters.

Little Falls had six hits in the game, including two each by Matt Martin and Isaac Smieja. Martin drove in a run and Smieja doubled and scored twice. Pat Krebs also homered and drove in two runs for the Flyers.

In an evening battle against St. Cloud Apollo at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud, the Flyers scored five runs in the top of the first inning. It was a short-lived lead as the Eagles came back with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and added three and eight runs, respectively, in the next two innings to surge ahead.

Smieja was two-for-two for the Flyers, added a walk and scored a run to pace the Flyers against the top-seeded and third-ranked Eagles. Bell doubled, walked and scored twice, and Krebs, Jason Zilka and Adam Czech had the other three hits–Zilka had two RBI and a run scored.
