Pierz senior earns state berth

Pierz will be represented in the upcoming State Girls’ Class AA Golf Tournament as a result of action in Tuesday’s Section 5A meet at Rich Prairie Golf Course in Cold Spring.

Senior Amber Sitzman qualified for state competition when she carded an 88 and placed fifth at the section meet. In addition to the team championship members, the top five individuals from each section earn state berths. Sitzman will be competing at state for the third time–twice as an individual and once as part of the Pioneers’ section championship team.

Carrie Korf and Melinda Janson also competed in the sectional meet and had respective rounds of 103 and 109.

Sauk Centre, led by Jackie Beste who had a 77 for medalist honors, captured the girls’ team title with 350 strokes, 16 ahead of runner-up Lester Prairie.

In addition to the Pioneer girls, Chris Boser had an 84 in the boys’ competition for Pierz. New London-Spicer’s Josh Cole and Chris Cole were co-medalists with 76s. Annandale won the boys’ title with 310 strokes, 10 ahead of runner-up New London-Spicer.

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle’s boys placed third as a team with a 326 total, led by Mark Hanson’s 77 which tied him for third place individually and earned him a state berth. Other members of the Thunder squad included Andy Sandelin, Ryan Ebnet and Josh Meyer with rounds of 83 and Rob Zoller and Ryan Steinert with 84s.
