Pierz and Swanville are winners in basketball season openers

Strong outside shooting and tough defensive play helped Pierz defeat Royalton, 67-23, in non-conference girls’ basketball action on Tuesday evening.

Three Pioneers were in double figures, led by junior forward Shiela Stegora who scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Senior guard Missy Girtz added 17 points and sophomore forward Allyson Kloss had 14 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Royalton’s Lori Henry paced the Royals with six points.

Pierz led 20-6 after the first quarter and outscored Royalton in each of the last three quarters. Most noticeable was field goal shooting where the Pioneers got off 28 more shots (64 to 36) and made 20 more (29 to nine). In addition, the Pioneers committed only nine turnovers and forced the Royals into 26.

“We really shot the ball well tonight from the outside,” said Rick Sczublewski, Pierz coach. “I thought several players had excellent games for us. Shiela (Stegora) was outstanding on both ends of the floor. Considering we are starting four new players, we took care of the ball very well, having only nine turnovers. Besides Shiela, Missy Girtz had an excellent game and Allyson Kloss gave us a big spark off the bench.”
