Storm rallies to beat Flyers by a goal in final moments

Little Falls fell victim to three goals in the final six minutes when the Flyers dropped an 8-7 non-conference high school hockey game to the visiting Storm of Sauk Rapids on Tuesday night.

The Flyers tied the score (5-5) at 4:21 of the third period on a shorthanded unassisted goal by Eric Rakow and then surged ahead, 7-5, on goals by Chris Dobis (Rakow assisted) on a power play at 6:21 and by Paul Herman (Rakow and Dobis assisted) on a power play at 8:21.

The Storm was not to be outdone and scored at 9:20, 13:30 and 14:59 to snatch the win from the Flyers.

In addition to the three third period goals by the Flyers, both Paul and Peter Herman scored in the first period off assists by Dobis and Erik Chisholm, respectively. Isaac Smieja tallied a short-handed second period goal and later in the same period, Rakow scored on a power play for Little Falls.

Statistics showed Flyer goalie Tony McElveen had 20 saves and that the Storm out-shot the Flyers 28 to 17. Little Falls had 36 minutes in penalties on 36 infractions and Sauk Rapids had 32 minutes on eight infractions.

The game was the season opener for both teams.
