Royalton has two shots at state tourney

Royalton could be two games away from a state Class A tournament berth.

The Royals, at 14-2, do not have a loss in the playoffs, meaning they could lose a game and still earn a state tournament slot.

The Royals will play Ogilvie at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Maple Lake in the opening round of the Section 5A tournament. Ogilvie, like Royalton, does not have a loss in the playoffs.

St. John’s Prep and Hill City are also in the Section 5A playoffs and both have one loss. The winner will advance and the loser will go home.

The St. John’s-Hill City winner will play the Royalton-Ogilvie loser Tuesday night at 7:30 in Maple Lake. The winner will advance but will advance with one loss.

This winner will meet the Royalton-Ogilvie winner for the Section 5A title at 7:30 Thursday, also in Maple Lake.

If the loser of the first championship game has only one loss, a second championship game will be played because of the double elimination format.

The winner of that game will play in the Class A state tournament June 14 and 15.
