Royalton wins S-Sub 5A title
Royals shut out St. John’s 9-0

Royalton claimed the South Subsection 5A baseball title Thursday night, shutting out St. John’s Prep 9-0.

“It was big win for us. It was important that we go into the Section 5A tournament without a loss,” explained Royalton Coach Rusty Gwost.

Royalton scored a run in each of the first three innings in Cold Spring Thursday night, scored three more in the fourth and three more in the sixth. The Royals had nine runs on 15 hits and one error.

St. John’s had only two hits and also had two errors.

Pete Gleisner, a sophomore, pitched all seven innings for Royalton, striking out 10 and walking only one.

Brian Hanson had a perfect game at the plate, going 4-4 with four RBI and scoring two runs.

Andrew Gurbada went 3-4 at the plate and scored three runs; Josh Goedderz, 2-4 with a double and drove in a run; Gleisner, 2-4 with two RBI; and Chris Fussy, 2-4 with four RBI.

The win was the 14th of the year for the Royals, against two losses.

One of the two losses was to Ogilvie, a 4-1 setback earlier in the season.

“We feel we are a much better team today. We didn’t throw our number one pitcher against Ogilvie and we won’t have prom night to worry about this year,” Coach Gwost said.

“Every game from now on is new territory for us. We’re excited,” the fifth-year coach said.
