Victory League (Week 5)

Victory League teams continue to make the adjustment from aluminum to wood bats. Two weeks ago, an average of 9.9 runs were scored per game. Last week’s total jumped to 12 runs per game.

Sobieski is now the only undefeated team left in the Victory League after five weeks of play. They are now 9-0 and on top of the West Division.

Bulldogs 12, Braves 4
Friday night saw the Pierz Bulldogs receive four hits from Paul Herman and Shawn Fischer and three hits from John Pohlkamp. The Bulldogs pounded out 19 total hits and committed only one error in the eight-run victory. Rick Sczublewski pitched six innings for the win and added two hits at the plate.

Chris Klavo homered for the Brainerd Braves in the loss.

St. Mathais 4, Brewers 2
Saturday began with Brett Thompson striking out five in 7.1 innings to lead St. Mathias to the win. Nate Hubner, Ben Houle, and Mike Innes each contributed a pair of hits while Chad Kilgore doubled home two RBI for St. Mathais.

Joey Tautges and Jason Sadlovsky went 2/4 in a losing effort for Pierz.

Opole 7, St. Wendel 0
Seven shutout innings and a pair of hits from Cory Hylla was all Opole needed as they notched the shutout victory.

Aiding Hylla in the win was T.J. Rand who was 2/4 with two RBI and Dan Notsch who drove in one along with two hits.

Sobieski 10, Avon 4
Simon Waltman picked up his second win in as many weeks as Sobieski continues to roll. The Skis, led by Joe Thoma’s three hits and three RBI, committed two errors and had 14 hits in the victory.

Dave Kulthoff went 3/5 with a homer for Avon.

Upsala 11, St. Stephen 2
Brothers Randy and Jamie Lenners teamed up to lead Upsala past St. Stephen. Randy parked a home run in the blowout win while Jamie earned the victory on the mound.

St. Stephen’s Chad Pflipsen went 4/4.

Holdingford wins, 10-1
Paul Bruns fanned 10 in six innings as Holdingford rolled over Flensburg. Tony Breth was 3/4 with a homer and four RBI to lead the Express at the plate while Chris Ebnet had three hits. Wade Barrett rounded out the offense for the Express with a two-run homer.

The only run for Flensburg came on a Pat Krebs homer.

Lastrup 13, Ft. Ripley 3
Ft. Ripley committed 9 errors in the field as they fell to Lastrup.

Lastrup’s Jamie Litke, Reggie Litke, Aaron Jenkins, Paul Jenkins, Donovan Daiker, and Dan Saehr all had a pair of hits. Jamie Litke managed to pitch around seven walks to gain the pitching victory.

Sobieski 6, Upsala 5
Joe Thoma launched a solo homerun in the eighth for the Skis to break a 3-3 tie. Sobieski added two more runs in the inning and held off a ninth inning Upsala rally to improve to 9-0 on the season.

Brad Czech scattered eight hits over eight inning in the Sunday afternoon contest for the win. He received offensive help from his brother, Jon, who went 2/4 with a double and RBI and from Nate Olson who finished 3/5 with two RBI.

Joe Bartkowicz homered for the Blue Jays (5-2) and Chris Leners went the distance on the mound in defeat.

Brewers 5, Buckman 4
The Pierz Brewers scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to steal a one-run victory from Buckman. Luke Weiland singled home the winning run off Buckman starter Scott Geiger to cap off the rally. Weiland also tossed a complete game for the pitching victory.

Geiger took the loss for Buckman despite striking out 13 in 8.1 innings. Buckman is now 3-3 while the Brewers improve to 5-2.

Randall 5, Brainerd 4
Nick Prozinski scored the game-winning run on a bunt by Josh Burgardt as Randall improved to 2-6. Dan Strack notched the win for the Cubs in relief while Jason Peterschick was 1/4 with two RBI.

Matt Aberle was 2/5 for the Braves while Jason Goergess suffered the loss in relief. Brainerd stranded 14 runners on the base paths.

Bulldogs 3, Lastrup 2
The Pierz Bulldogs (1-5) squeaked out a one-run victory behind starting pitcher Shawn Fischer. Fischer went the distance, only allowing eight hits. Clint Sullivan and Chad Herman were each 2/4 for the Bulldogs.

Donovan Daiker, Jimmy Kyrch, and Rich Schilman all went 2/4 for Lastrup (3-3).

Avon 11, St. Stephen 7
Gary Deters went 3/6 with two doubles to help improve Avon to 3-5. Troy Wunderlich was the winning pitcher.

Dan Wainwright suffered the loss for St. Stephen, now 1-7.

Holdingford wins again
Holdingford is now 8-1 as they knocked off St. Wendel, 8-2. Joel Swenson struck out seven in a complete game effort to improve his mark to 5-0.

Cory Guck was 3/4 with a triple and an RBI at the plate. Aaron Meier and Chris Ebnet each chipped in with two hits.

Matt Huls went 4/4 in a losing effort for St. Wendel (2-8).

Ft. Ripley rolls, 20-3
Ft. Ripley took advantage of 15 walks and three hit batters by St. Mathias pitchers to gain an easy seven-inning victory. Tim Cekas scored five times for the Rebels while Kurt Veith went 2/3 with three runs scored. Andy Hardy drove in five runs to go along with three hits.

With the win, Ft. Ripley is now 6-1. St. Mathais falls to 4-3.
