Opening day at State Tournament both sweet and bitter for area wrestlers

Jesse Zajac, 171, fell to Jamie Wagner of Nicollet via a 13-3 major decision. Josh Otremba, 189, was pinned and eliminated by Dane Hanson of Badger/Greebush Middle River in 3:14.

Individual Results – Royalton
Matt Mrnak and Ryan Smude of Royalton suffered setbacks in at the tournament. Mrnak, 171 pounds, was eliminated from competition in the first round at the hands of Justin Cox of Menahga/Sebeka via a 3:11 pin. 112-pound Smude opened the tourney with a dominating performance over Brady Schneeberger of Ashby. Smude bowled over his opponent and immobilized him in 17 seconds. Smude, though not eliminated from competition, was pinned by David Cunningham of Meadow Creek-Rivers Christian in 1:44.

Individual Results – Little Falls
Flyer Wrestler Chris Roach, 130, was hit with a 15-0 technical fall against against Ryan Pottebaum of Apple Valley. Facing off against Omesa Meschack of Robbinsdale Cooper in the third place bracket, Roach was eliminated in a close match 8-6.

Flyer Adam Gosiak, 171 pounds and 34-4 on the season, defeated Nic Borchardt of Woodbury via pin at 5:41 and then cleaned up on Luke Ties of Rochester Mayo, 7-2. Gosiak will continue in his hunt for a State Championship against Matt Wetterling of Willmar on Feb. 28.
