‘Pay to stay’ proposal explained to commissioners

Some counties are already charging county inmates to stay at the jail. Morrison County may soon join them.

Addressing the issue at the May 27 commissioners planning meeting, Sheriff Michel Wetzelpresented a proposal to the commissioners which would require inmates sentenced to jail from Morrison County to pay $20 a day.

Upon release the inmates would be presented with a bill for their stay.

A proposal for collecting the monies has been received from the Little Falls Collection Bureau. It would receive 8.5 percent of the money collected through the regular billing process, 30 percent on active collection and 50 percent through court collection.

The commissioners will take action on the the issue at their June 10 meeting.
