Little Falls under-12 baseball takes state title

(Pictured is the Little Falls U-12 baseball team who finished their season strong, by winning the MSF Division B State Tournament, July 25-27. The team was one of five out-state teams to compete in the 24 team tourney. LF placed fourth earlier this summer in the MBT (Minnesota Baseball Tournaments) State Tournament. In the first game, LF defeated Bloomington 15-2 in five innings. Batting highlights for LF: Ben Hanowski went 3-for-3 with two RBI, Joe Rydeen was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI and Ronnie Kornbaum added a 3-for-3 performance and added an RBI.

In game two, LF defeated Willmar in seven innings, 13-8. Batting highlights: Izaak Berglund went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI; Riley Hirsh contributed a hit and RBI; Matt Wasland hit a homer; Isaac Thoma went 2-for-3 with two RBI; Ben Hanowski, Dillon Lundin, Rydeen, Chris Hortness and Michael Sperl each had a hit and RBI.

Game three featured LF taking on New Ulm, with the outcome the same as the previous two games, LF won 17-2. Batting highlights: Riley Hirsh went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI; Hanowski went 2-for-2 with a RBI; Lundin went 1-for-2 with a RBI; Rydeen went 2-for-3 with a RBI; Sperl went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI; Wasland hit a triple and drove in a RBI; Kornbaum went 3-for-3 with a RBI; Hortness had an RBI-base hit; Kyler Pekarek went 1-for-1 with a RBI; Peter Suska hit a double and two RBI; Thoma was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI and Noah Peterschick went 2-for-3.

The fourth game was equally impressive as the team beat Woodbury 12-1 in five innings. Batting highlights were: Berglund hit a RBI-double; Hirsh went 2-for-2; Hanowski went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and five RBI; Lundin went 2-for-3 with an RBI; Sperl contributed a double and two RBI; Thoma had a hit and two RBI and Kornbaum, Pekarek and Josh Nelson each had a hit.

In the semi-final game the LF team took on Brainerd. The final score was 8-2 in favor of LF. Batting highlights: Berglund hit a triple; Hanowski hit a home run with two RBI; Hortness went 2-for-2 with two RBI; Sperl, Wasland, Kornbaum and Peterschick each collected a hit.

In the championship game, LF took on Burnsville and won 12-1. Batting highlights: Hanowski went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a triple and three RBI; Sperl hit a two-RBI double; Lundin, Rydeen, Kornbaum and Suska each had a hit and RBI.

The team finished the year with a 22-4 record while compiling a .418 team batting average in the MSF State Tournament. The team was coached by Carl Rydeen and Steve Hortness.
