Flyers get first ever win over Otters

Who says the 14th time isn’t a charm?

Heading into the Tuesday, Jan. 27 game in Fergus Falls the Little Falls team knew they had to end the losing streak sometime.

“They (Otters) put the screws to us early and caught us on our heels,” said Flyer Head Coach Tony Couture about his team that was getting outshot 13-3 at one point in the opening period. The coach, who had a career mark of 0-8 against the Otters, knew something had to give. So he put his top line back together late in the first period. This decision resulted in Morgan Cekalla recording a goal on a 2-on-1 break with Anthony Turk being credited with the helper.

Little Falls led 1-0 until late in the second period when Fergus Falls lit the lamp with 39 seconds left in the second period. “After the first goal we really settled down and stuck with them,” said the Flyer coach.

Little Falls went ahead 2-1 1:01 into the final period as Steven Festler found the back of the net with help from Cekalla and Mark Hammerbeck. The goal came on a powerplay after an Otter intentionally sprayed LF goalie Aaron Jorgensen, resulting in a two minute minor for unsportsmanllike conduct.

Fergus Falls had numerous other chances tie the game as the closest came when Cekalla took the puck off the Flyer redline as it had gotten past the goalie. The resulting play was an empty net— insurance goal with :19 left to play. “We won the game, but there wasn’t anything fancy about it,” Couture said.

The road only gets tougher for the Flyers as they now have opportunities to gain some crucial Section 4A wins against Willmar, Apollo, and the 20th ranked team in Class A Wadena-Deer Creek (13-0) at the Exchange Arena.
