USA destroys Osakis in five innings, 22-3

The Upsala/Swanville Area Patriot bats couldn’t be stopped April 27 as the team drove in 22 runs on 12 hits at Osakis.

After being down 3-1 in the first inning the Patriots responded to score four, seven and nine runs between the second, third and fourth innings to cruise to the lopsided win.

“We were just due to breakout,” commented USA Head Coach Ken Solarz. “But once we got started everything went together.” Brandon Defoe led the Patriots bats going 3-for-3 with five RBI, a double, home run and scored four runs. Darren Solarz drove in three RBI to go along with a pair of hits and stole a base.

Dylan Pittman went the distance for the win (five innings) as he sat down eight batters and allowed three earned runs.

USA bats keep swinging
The Patriots didn’t skip a beat as they brought their fireworks to the Upsala ball field in a 16-6 Prairie Conference win over Browerville-Eagle Valley, April 29.

Offense was in excess again as the home team belted five round trippers in the contest. USA Pitcher Matt Swanson led the team with a pair of home runs and collected three RBI. Ben Burggraff tallied four RBI as he went 4-for-5 which included a homer. Dylan Pittman and Tyler Thieschafer accounted for the remaining homer runs as each had one. “The air was fairly still, but it was cool and the ball was carrying,”said USA Skipper Ken Solarz.

Solarz attributed a portion of the recent offensive performance to what he told the kids before the Osakis game. He told them to keep scoring after establishing a lead. “We were up 3-0 at Royalton and 2-0 at B-B-E but then the bats went silent for the rest of the game,” Solarz added. “I told the guys, ‘We need to keep them down by scoring more runs.’ And we’ve been doing that.”

Swanson used a nasty curve ball to strike out nine batters in four innings of work to record the win. “Matt’s off-speed pitches are really working for him, but when he began to lose control is when B-EV had their eight hits,” Solarz explained.

USA is now 5-1 in the Prairie Conference and 6-2 overall. The team travels to St. Joseph to play St. John’s Prep, May 4.
