Remembering the big brother who didn’t come back

The dreaded telegram came—“Regret to inform you your son Raphael J. Hines missing since May 4 in North American Area. If further details or other information of his status are received you will be promptly notified. The Adjutant General.”

The year was 1943. Hines, a member of the Merchant Marines, was 21 when his ship, the Oneida, went down about 70 miles off Lake Charles, VA.
