Give them the chance, service or not

To the Editor:

Our troops are spread out very thin. We know the war on drugs is a laugh. There are thousands locked up for marijuana charges. The ones that are in jail for five years or so, just for smoking, could be given the chance to go into the service or not. It costs just as much to keep them locked up as it would be to train them. It would be on a volunteer basis. These men are somewhat older and would make good soldiers. We could have more of army to protect us. Then one cost would offset the other. It is something to take seriously. I don’t see anyway we could lose.—Barney Barnhill, Pierz.
