Thankful for all who served

To the Editor:

Regarding the letter last week from Loren Olson.

I agree that we need to remember all of those fighting for peace and freedom, and I am sad when I hear about people like Maria Ruzicka, but here is where my opinion differs.

First the military has been an all volunteer force since the mid 70’s. Those that were drafted and stayed in did so of their own choice. He stated that he “admired more those who are in a very dangerous place by choice.” That would be every man and woman serving in our military today. They make that commitment when they “raise their right hand and swear to protect and defend.”

Secondly, we need to remember that those service members are there to protect the peace and to provide freedom to those that were under the oppressive boot of terrorism. We should not be elevating any one person above any other. All of them are there by choice and all of them “face what must seem insurmountable obstacles.”

Finally, I believe that we all have a purpose. Maria had her purpose, just as those service members have a purpose. I am thankful for all of them.—Sandra Hick, Little Falls
