To the Editor:
I am honored to invite WWII veterans and their families to be special guests at the State Capitol on Sunday, Aug. 14 from 12 to 5 p.m. to celebrate the ground breaking of the new World War II Veterans Memorial. The ground breaking ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Court of Honor on the State Capitol Mall in downtown Saint Paul, directly across the mall from the front of the State Capitol Building.
Construction of this monument to honor members of a great generation on the Capitol grounds is long overdue. I am pleased that this project is commencing, and I look forward to its completion in the spring of 2006 when visitors to the Capitol can honor the thousands of Minnesotans who served in WWII, those who died, and all who supported the war at home.
Visitors are invited to view design panels of the new memorial on display in the Capitol Rotunda or take a walk along the Capitol Mall. Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs and the designers of the memorial will be on hand to meet with visitors and present a behind the scenes look at the origin, design and symbolism of the memorial.—Representative Mary Ellen Otremba, District 11B.
