Willmar edges Pierz in battle of volleyball giants

By Chris Schafer

As a team ranked number six Class 2A, the Pioneers rarely find themselves gunning for an upset.

Enter the Willmar Cardinals, number five in Class 3A.

The region rarely sees such a contest between two top teams.

Willmar took game one of the match after hopping up on Pierz 9-3 early. The Cardinals held on to take a 25-16 game-one win.

The Pioneers fought back in game two and played the match close but with Willmar leading 12-10, the Cardinals went on a four-point run and took game two 25-18.

Game three resembled game one and the Cardinals jumped out to an 11-4 lead before taking the game 25-15 and the match 3-0.

After the game Pioneers Coach Kurt Stumpf said of Willmar, “There is a reason that they are ranked number five in Class 3A. They are an excellent offensive team.” He further added, “We made some good plays but not enough to gain momentum.”

Highlights for the Pioneers included senior Kayla Meyer with 12 successful digs, senior Lisa Pohlkamp with 10 kills and senior Lisa Kurtz with 10 assists.

Willmar 3, Pierz 0

Kills: Pohlkamp 10; Kurtz 6; Riley 3.
