Upsala School Board Chairman Bill Krivanek told board members that Pastor John Benson called and offered to make a donation to the school. Pastor Benson, a resident of Upsala, offered to donate a dollar amount equal to the referendum tax he would have paid had the measure passed.
In a district that already pays some of the highest property taxes in the state, the story seemed to grow straight out of Shel Silverstein’s classic tale, “The Giving Tree.” Benson’s gesture inspired other members of the community to consider a similar tax deductible contribution. School board members will set up a bank account exclusively for these funds.
