Football: Elks beaten 31-14 at Centennial homecoming (9-28)

Elk River had a blocked punt in the first half and led 14-7 early before fading against Centennial in a 31-14 defeat the the Cougar homecoming on Friday night.

A blocked punt helped Elk River play a strong first half against Centennial but the Cougars took charge in the second half and beat the Elks 31-14 on Friday night.

Travis Rogness blocked a punt by Adam Dumas in the first quarter. Aaron Chounard scooped up the ball with a clear field in front of him but Dumas caught him at the Centennial 20. The Elks still got the touchdown on an eight-yard run by Matt Sullivan.

Centennial, celebrating its Homecoming, responded with a big pass play on a 4th-and-2 at the Elk 40. Ryan Matrious got wide open and hauled in a pass from Tim Lund for the score.

The Elks regained a 14-7 lead on Mike Hoaglund's 20-yard run. Centennial tied it 14-14 by halftime on Jeff Burns' 12-yard run.

Centennial (2-3) blanked the Elks (1-4) in the second half. They pulled ahead 21-14 on a 27-yard run by Josh Johnson in the third quarter and made a back-breaking drive that consumed over six minutes in the fourth quarter. Lund's one-yard run made it 28-14.

The Elks were stopped on a fourth-down play at their own 20 and Centennial tacked on a 32-yard field goal by Brandon Hertog.

Elk River will host Osseo next Friday.
