Football: Thunder fall 34-13 to unbeaten Foley (9-28)

The Zimmerman football team finished strong but lost 34-13 to unbeaten Foley after trailing 20-0 at the half.

The Zimmerman Thunder played an encouraging second half Friday night but the unbeaten Foley Falcons dominated the first half on the way to a 34-13 win.

"My guys played with a lot of heart and soul in the second half," said Thunder coach Dave Hamlin. "We are coming along pretty well. It (progress) is just happening in weird stages. I've going to change some things next week to get us more ready to play from the opening gun."

Foley led 20-0 at the break as Bryce Gapinski passed to Eric Herm for touchdowns of 30 and 24 yards and Tom Udermann dashed 72 yards for a score.

Zimmerman sprang a big pass play early in the third quarter with Zach Mettling hauling in the aerial from Glen Bye and scoring from 55 yards out.

"We were back in the game. It was 20-7 and we had some momentum," said Hamlin. "But they made a couple third and longs, and then their guy Winkelman scored on a trap play that was the best run I've seen this year."

Kyle Winkelman busted that play for 33 yards and Foley was back up 28-7. Then Udermann picked off an overthrown ball by Bye and darted 21 yards to make it 34-7.

Zimmerman closed it out with a sustained drive capped by Jamin Ivers' one-yard run.

Ivers carried 16 times for 50 yards. Bye had a tough night against the Foley defense, hitting four of 20 for 72 yards with three interceptions. The Thunder had 84 yards rushing and 72 passing.

It's Homecoming next week for Zimmerman. The Thunder will host Milaca on Friday.
