Celebrate “Close to Home” on June 21 & 22 in the historical Spencer Brook area. A two-day fund raising event is planned to mark this milestone and to kick-off the upcoming renovation of the Spencer Brook District #1 school. There will be something for everyone of all ages, all weekend.

Saturday begins with two bicycle rides sponsored by the Cambridge Bicycling Club. Several presentations will be held throughout the day by BirdChick Sharon Stiteler (Birdchick.com). Bruce White, noted author and historian from Taylors Falls, will speak about the Ojibwa and their presence in Isanti County. Ever wanted to try disk golf? Ever had to use a two-man saw and cut a log? Try them both and win prizes. Fast Draw competitions will run simultaneously both days. Game World will have inflatable events for the kids.

Sunday includes a church service held under the “big tent;” a canoe cleanup on the Rum River; a family Kub game and an Isanti County Sheriff Canine demonstration. There will be food for sale by the Spencer Brook Methodist Church in the morning, afternoon and into the evening on both days. A celebration of this magnitude would not be complete without music — Saturday by fiddler Paul Blondell of Princeton and Eben & Barb Gillespie of Cambridge, and Sunday by Larry Malmberg on the accordion.

A live auction will be held Saturday with items donated with values ranging up to $2,700, to raise funds for the renovation of the school. A silent auction will be held Saturday sponsored by the Spencer Brook United Methodist Church. The weekend will culminate with an ice cream social.

Admission is $5/adult, $2.50 children 10 & under. This event is sponsored by the Isanti County Historical Society, Spencer Brook Methodist Church and the Spencer Brook Historical Restoration Association. Save gas money and travel time and stay “close to home” this weekend — you won’t regret it.
