Track: Royals' Brunn makes 'state' in 800 meters (5-30)

Heather Brunn of Rogers took second in a very close race with a Centennial girl in the 800 meters at the section meet Friday to earn a return trip to the state meet.

Heather Brunn of Rogers placed second in a very close race against Emily Emerson of Centennial at the Section 5AA track meet Friday to earn a return trip to the state meet.

Brunn, a senior who took fifth at state last year, and Emerson were head-to-head the whole race, about four or five seconds ahead of the next runner, in the meet at Hamline. Both finished in 2:15 and a fraction.

"I have really long strides, and I need to work on making them shorter and quicker to sprint the lat 100 yards," reflected Brunn. "It was a super close race."

Brunn placed third in high jump with 5-foot-1. The top three girls all went 5-foot-1 but the other two advanced on fewer misses. Brunn was a state qualifier in high jump last year.

Rogers also placed sixth in the 4-by-800 relay and seventh in the 4-by-400, both anchored by Brunn.

The state meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Hamline.
