Throughout her childhood, Beckie Perkins of Apple Valley heard the word “can’t” over and over.

“Growing up, many kids around my community would call me names,” Perkins said through sign language as her husband, Bob, interpreted. “I think that’s why I worked so hard to prove to others I was smart and I could do anything they could.”
