Three deaths reported on Houston County roads this weekend

The Memorial Day weekend began with tragedy, as three persons were killed in two separate accidents on Houston County roads Friday and Saturday.

Caledonia youth
A 15-year-old Caledonia youth, Shane DeWitt, died of injuries sustained Friday night in an ATV accident in rural Caledonia.

According to a statement issued Saturday by the Houston County Sheriff’s Department, the Sheriff’s Department, Caledonia Police and Fire departments and Caldedonia Ambulance Service responded to the accident at 9:25 p.m. Friday on CSAH 12 about three miles west of Caledonia.

DeWitt was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a freshman at Caledonia Area High School.

Two killed near Rushford
A 32-year-old Houston man and his three-year-old daughter were killed in a crash about noon Saturday three miles east of Rushford on  Highway 16 in Houston County.

Jeremy Cox and his daughter Isabel were killed when  a trailer that was being pulled by a 2001 Dodge Ram  became detatched from the pick-up and struck the on-coming 2003 Honda CRV driven by Cox. An infant, Liam Cox, was also in the Honda. He sustained minor injuries.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the driver of the pick-up Amanda Engelhart, 25, of Adams, Minn. and her passengers, Jeffrey Morgan, 36, of Elkton, Minn., and Anna Belle Engelhart, 1,, of Adams, Minn., were not injured.

The Engelhart vehicle was eatbound on Highway 16 whern the trailer became detached and struck the westbound Honda driven by Cox.
