Moorhead ends Bluejackets' season

Spuds score just enough points, force turnovers to win semifinals 9-3

A lackluster offensive effort spoiled a decent defensive day for Cambridge-Isanti Football when visiting Moorhead left town with a 9-3 victory in the Oct.30 Section 8AAAAA semifinals. The Bluejackets turned the ball over three times in the first half, and the Spuds added a key interception in the fourth quarter to advance to the section championship.

Linebacker Marcus Dahlquist made a big tackle in the flats to help stop a Moorhead drive inside Jacket territory in the third quarter.

Moorhead scored the lone points of the first half on a 35-yard flea flicker into the wind, but missed the extra point for the 6-0 lead. C-I drove for a 23-yard Eric Mielke field goal on its first possession of the second half.

The Bluejackets defense limited the Spuds to yards between the 20s to keep the team in the game. With 4:12 remaining, the Jackets had the ball at their 40 yard line following a punt into the wind, but a sack and an interception by Moorhead’s Karson Kuhlman killed that drive.

The Spuds converted that final turnover into a 28-yard field goal for the 9-3 edge. The Jackets final possession with no timeouts remaining went incompletion, incompletion, sack and sack.

C-I closed the season with a 5-5 record, while Moorhead improved to 6-4.
