In a rematch of last season’s state quarterfinal game, the results were reversed this time around.

Lakeville South shutout Rosemount 17-0 on Friday night to move to 5-0. It was Rosemount’s second straight loss to a team from Lakeville dropping the team’s record to 3-2. Rosemount ended Lakeville South’s  season last year in the state tournament beating the Cougars 24-14.

“We’ve been waiting all offseason to get our revenge,” Lakeville South quarterback Mitch Leidner said.

Both teams spent much of the first half trying to figure out each other’s defense.

“Our defense was playing great, but their defense was stopping us,” Leidner said.

The Cougars found it difficult to run or convert on third down, while the Irish struggled throwing. Turnovers were the difference again for the Irish. A week after losing four fumbles against Lakeville North, the Irish gave up possession on a fumble and  an interception.

“I thought we were a little tight to start with,” Lakeville South coach Larry Thompson said.  “We knew this was a big game and we haven’t had one in a couple weeks. It took us a while to adjust to their speed and toughness, but it was a good win. We got the turnovers. That was big.”

Up 3-0 after the first half thanks to an Andrew O’Reilly 27-yard field goal, the Cougars found some cracks in the Irish defense in the second half. Leidner found out receivers open on short routes and they connected.

“That’s what they were giving us,” Leidner said. “Those guys were playing way off so I could get the ball to them on the short (routes).”

Leidner put the Cougars up 10-0 with a 1-yard quarterback sneak, and with 2:22 left in the third quarter he found Devon Bzoskie open for a 3-yard touchdown to go up 17-0.

Leidner was 16-for-26 for 195 yards and one touchdown. Matt Heller caught 10 of those passes for 103 yards. For Rosemount, Andy Gustafson had another strong game with 25 carries for 116 yards. Nate LeMoine was 7-for-17 for 88 yards.

Rosemount will play host to Apple Valley next Friday night. The Eagles lost to Eastview 17-0 on Friday night dropping their record to 0-5. Lakeville South will travel to crosstown rival Lakeville North on Friday. The Panthers defeated Burnsville 17-14 on Friday.
